Alpha May Layton Hamilton, 75, of Madison, died Monday, April 11, 2011, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Madison, the daughter of Robert and Alfrieda Marcella Hunter Layton. She had worked early in life as a waitress at Daddy Big's Restaurant in Chelsea. She kept busy raising her five children. She was of the Baptist faith and was baptized early in life. She enjoyed painting pictures and caring for her husband. She was a life member of Jefferson Post 9 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1969 Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence Delbert Hamilton Sr., whom she married Sept. 27, 1971; two sons, William Paul Craig of Dupont and Clarence Delbert Hamilton Jr. of Milton, Ky.; two daughters, Alfrieda Kay Reynolds and Cynthia Dawn Kietzman, both of Madison; three sisters, Clara Gwendolyn Gentry of Bloomington, Carol June Whitson of Shattuck, Okla., and Martha Lucille Cooley of Milton, Ky.; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by one son, David K. Craig, who died July 20, 2010; her parents; one infant sister, Betty Jean Layton; one brother, Robert Berton Layton; and one stepbrother, Charles L. Semon.

The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
