Hugh Reed was born on 22 Mar 1848 in Cumberland County, Illinois. His parents were John S. Reed and Sarah Ann Smith. It appears he may have had at least eight full siblings; Orvel, David Smith, Lydia Louisa, Sarah Belle, Emma Louise, Ella, John S, and William S. Unfortunately, Orvel and John passed away as infants. He also had a half-sister, Mary Cochran, from his mother's first marriage.

In his early years, he grew up in Cumberland County, Illinois with his parents and siblings. According to the 1850 United States Federal Census taken on 26 Aug 1850, they were living in Long Point Precinct of Cumberland County, Illinois. At the time, Hugh was 3 years old and living with his parents, John Reed (30) and Sarah (25) and his brother; David (1). A half-sister, Mary Cochran (5), from his mother's previous marriage also lived with them. In addition, his now widowed grandfather, Hugh Reed (55) and Uncle Cyrus (25) also lived with them. According to the 1855 Illinois State Census taken on 3 Jul 1855, they were living in Cumberland County, Illinois. No names were listed on the census besides the head of the family (J.S. Reed). At the time, the following gender and age groups were listed in the household; Two males under 10 which is consistent with Hugh born in 1848 and brother David born in 1850; One Male 30-40 consistent with his father John who was born in 1820; Two females under 10 consistent with sisters Louisa born in 1853 and Sarah born in 1855; One female 10-20 consistent with sister Lydia born in 1843; One female 30-40 consistent with his mother Sarah born in 1821. According to the 1860 United States Federal Census taken on 31 Jul 1860, they lived near Greenup, Greenup Precinct, Cumberland County. At the time, Hugh was 13 years old and living with his parents, John S Reed (41) and Sarah (39) and his 4 siblings; David (9), Laniza (7), Sarah (6), Emma (5 or 3). In addition, a half -sister, Mary Cochran (15), from his mother's previous marriage also lived with them. According to the 1865 Illinois State Census taken on 3 Jul 1865, they were still living in Union Township, Cumberland County, Illinois. No names were listed on the census besides the head of the family (J.S. Reed). At the time, the following gender and age groups were listed in the household; One male under 10 consistent with brother William born in 1864; Two females under 10 (possibly sisters Emma and Ella), two males between 10-20 which is consistent with Hugh born in 1848 and brother David born in 1850, two females between 10-20 consistent with sisters Louisa born in 1853 and Sarah born in 1855, one male between 40-50 consistent with his father John who was born in 1820, one female between 40-50 consistent with his mother Sarah born in 1821. Of note, they lived next to his Uncle Cyrus Reed and grandfather Hugh Reed. According to the 1870 United States Federal Census taken on 28 Jul 1870 near Diona in Union Township, Cumberland, Illinois. At the time, Hugh Reed was 23 years old and lived as a farm laborer on the John Stull family farm. John Stull was married to Hugh's half-sister Mary (Cochran).

Hugh married Mollie Campbell around 1871 presumably in Cumberland County, Illinois.
They would eventually have at least four children; Grove, Nellie, Jennie Blanche, and Hattie Lucinda. According to the 1880 United States Federal Census taken on 4 Jun 1880, they lived in Union Township, Cumberland, Illinois. At the time, Hugh Reed was 32 years old and lived with his spouse Mollie (26) and their two children; Grove (6) and Nellie (4). Hugh listed as a farmer. Of note, he lived close to his parents and siblings. It appears he lived in the area until his death in 1890. It appears Hugh was a farmer all his life.

According to his gravestone, Hugh passed away on 09 Sep 1890 in Cumberland County, Illinois. However, no official vital records are in my possession to confirm the date and location at this time. He was laid to rest around 11 Sep 1890 in Macedonia Cemetery in Union Township, Cumberland County, Illinois.
