Hugh Reed was born on 22 Mar 1848 in Cumberland County, Illinois. His parents were John S. Reed and Sarah Ann Smith. It appears he may have had at least eight full siblings; Orvel, David Smith, Lydia Louisa, Sarah Belle, Emma Louise, Ella, John S, and William S. Unfortunately, Orvel and John passed away as infants. He also had a half-sister, Mary Cochran, from his mother's first marriage.
In his early years, he grew up in Cumberland County, Illinois with his parents and siblings. According to the 1850 United States Federal Census taken on 26 Aug 1850, they were living in Long Point Precinct of Cumberland County, Illinois.
