Ella Reed was born on 2 Sep 1860 near Greenup in Cumberland County, Illinois. Her parents were John S. Reed and Sarah Ann Smith. It appears she may have had at least eight full siblings; Orvel, Hugh, David Smith, Lydia Louise, Sarah Belle, Emma Louise, John S, and William S. Unfortunately, Orvel and John passed away as infants. She also had a half-sister, Mary Cochran, from her mother's first marriage.

In her early years, she grew up in Cumberland County, Illinois with her parents and siblings. According to the 1865 Illinois State Census taken on 3 Jul 1865, they were living in Union Township, Cumberland County, Illinois. No names were listed on the census besides the head of the family (J.S. Reed). At the time, the following gender and age groups were listed in the household; One male under 10 consistent with brother William born in 1863; Two females under 10 consistent with Sister Emma and Ella, two males between 10-20 which is consistent with brothers Hugh born in 1848 and David born in 1850, two females between 10-20 consistent with sisters Louisa born in 1853 and Sarah born in 1855, one male between 40-50 consistent with her father John who was born in 1820, one female between 40-50 consistent with her mother Sarah born in 1821. Of note, they lived next to her Uncle Cyrus Reed and grandfather Hugh Reed. According to the 1870 United States Federal Census taken on 25 Jul 1870, they were still living in Union Township, Cumberland County, Illinois. At the time, Ellen was 10 years old and lived with her parents John S Read (50) and Sarah (49) and her 5 siblings; David (20), Louise (17), Sarah (15), Emmie (14), and William (6). According to the 1880 United States Federal Census taken on 4 Jun 1880, they were still living in Union Township, Cumberland County, Illinois. At the time, Helen was 19 years old and lived with her parents John S Read (60) and Sarah (59) and her 3 siblings; Lydia (37), Emma (23), and William S (15). In addition, her Nephew Earl (6 mos) also lived with them.

According to census records, Ella married Delos Carpenter around 1884 presumably in Cumberland County, Illinois. Delos passed away in 1920. Ella married Pless Wilson on 12 Apr 1922 in Paxton, Ford, Illinois. Pless passed away in 1922. Emma and Delos would eventually have six children; Viva Lillian, Raymond William, Harry O, Thomas Reed, Norman E, and Velma Fern. After her marriage to Delos around 1884, it appears they stayed in the area. According to the 1900 United States Federal Census taken on 11 Jun 1900, they owned a farm in Union Township, Cumberland, Illinois. At the time, Ella Carpenter was 38 years old and lived with her spouse Delos (43) and their four children; Biva L (11), Ray W (10), Harry O (6), and Tommy (3). According to the 1910 United States Federal Census taken on 10 May 1910, they rented a home in Fogleman Township, Crittenden, Arkansas. According to the 1940 United States Federal Census taken on 26 Apr 1940, she still lived in Ludlow, Champaign, Illinois. At the time, Ella Carpenter was 79 years old where she lived with her daughter Velma Johnson (33) and her husband Clarence E Johnson (40) and their two children Harry (16) and Jean (15). It appears she lived in the area until her death in 1946. Ella passed away at the age of 85 on 9 Jun 1946 in Ludlow, Champaign, Illinois.
