BIOGRAPHY UPDATED on 9 Jul 2022

John S Reed was born around 5 Feb 1820 in Licking County, Ohio. His parents were Hugh Reed and Nancy Edwards. It appears he may have had four siblings, however only his two brothers are currently known; Cyrus and William Augustus. According to census records, he may have had a sister born between 1821-1825 and another brother born between 1831-1835. Unfortunately, no additional details are available on the latter two siblings.

In his early years, he grew up in Licking County, Ohio with his parents and siblings. According to the 1820 United States Federal Census taken on 7 Aug 1820, the family lived in Union Township, Licking County, Ohio. Although no names are listed on the census besides the head of the family, I presume that John was included in this census. At the time, Hugh Reed was listed as the head of the family and the following gender and age groups were listed in the household; One male under 10 (b. 1810-1820) consistent with John Reed born in 1820; One male 16 thru 25 (b. 1795-1804) consistent with his father Hugh Reed who was born around 1795; One unknown female 10 thru 15 (b. 1810-1815); One Female 16 thru 25 (b. 1795-1804) consistent with his mother Nancy (Edwards) who was born around 1801; One female 45 and over (b. before 1775) potentially could be either Hugh or Nancy's mother. According to the 1830 United States Federal Census, they were still listed as living in Union Township, Licking County, Ohio. Although no names are listed on the census besides the head of the family, I presume that John is included in this census. At the time, Hugh Reed was listed as the head of the family and the following gender and age groups were listed in the household; One Male Under 5 (b. 1825-1830) consistent with brother William born in 1826, two males 5 thru 9 (b. 1821-1825) consistent with John born in 1820 and his brother Cyrus born about 1822, one male 30 thru 39 (b. 1791-1800) consistent with his father Hugh Reed who was born around 1795, one Female 5 thru 9 (b. 1821-1825) who is presumably an unknown sister, one Female 20 thru 29 (b. 1801-1810) presumably his mother Nancy (Edwards) who was born around 1801. According to the 1840 United States Federal Census taken in 1840, they were still in Union Township, Licking County, Ohio. Although no names are listed on the census besides the head of the family, I presume that John is included in this census. At the time, Hugh Reed was listed as the head of the family and the following gender and age groups were listed in the household; One male 5 thru 9 (b. 1831-1835) who may be an unknown brother, one male 10 thru 14 (b. 1826-1830) consistent with brother William born in 1826, 2 males 15 thru 19 (b. 1821-1825) consistent with John born in 1820 and his brother Cyrus born about 1822, one male 40 thru 49 (1791-1800) consistent with his father Hugh Reed who was born around 1795, one female 15 thru 19 (b. 1821-1825) who is presumably an unknown sister, one female 30 thru 39 (b. 1801-1810) presumably his mother Nancy (Edwards) who was born around 1801. According to published books about Cumberland County Illinois, sometime between 1840 and 1843, the entire family moved about 340 miles west to Cumberland County, Illinois. In 1843, Cumberland County was formed from parts of other Illinois counties.

According to unsourced family records, at the age of 25 John married 24-year-old Sarah "Sallie" Ann Smith on 10 Aug 1845 at the Smith family home in Cumberland County, Illinois. John and Sarah would eventually have 9 Children; Orvel, Hugh, David Smith, Lydia Louisa, Sarah Belle, Emma Louise, Ella, John S, and William S. Orvel and John passed away as infants. Sarah had a daughter Mary Cochran from her first marriage.
