Claude E. Conner, Local Attorney, Interred Tuesday

Funeral services for Claude Eugene Conner, 66, prominent local attorney, were held at four o'clock Tuesday after noon from the family home, 415 Dale Street, with the Rev. Virgil L. Bryant, Jr., pastor of Columbia Presbyterian Church, officiating. Assisting in the rites was the Rev. John R. Eubanks, pastor of North Columbia Baptist Church.
Interment was in Columbia Cemetery with Masonic rites at the graveside conducted by St. Alban's Lodge, of which the deceased was a member. Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were H. H. McLeod, E. E. Baylis, Doyle Coats, Neil Beck, Fred McDaniel, Jr., Sam Lawrence, Jr., Lem Pittman and Winfred Callender.
All local attorneys were honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Conner died at Marion County General Hospital at four-thirty Monday morning after a brief illness. He had been a patient there since Sunday afternoon and his death was unexpected, coming as a shock to his family and many friends.
MR. Conner, a practicing attorney here since 1912, was born at Ackerman, the son of the late M. W. and Nannie Covington Conner. He resided at Hattiesburg for a period of time before coming to Columbia in 1905 since which time he had made his home here.
He was graduated from the University of Mississippi Law School in 1912 and was a member of Kappa Alpha social fraternity.
Mr. Conner was a member and former secretary of St. Alban's Masonic Lodge, a Shriner and Knights Templar.
He held membership in the Christian Church in Hattiesburg however attended the local Presbyterian Church.
In 1916 he was married to Miss Julia Kendel and they have maintained their home here and reared their family.
Mr. Conner, a useful citizen of his community, had served for the chancellor many times on the bench in local Chancery Court, was chairman of the local Citizens' Council, chairman of the county delegation to the state Democratic convention.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Kendel Conner; three daughters, Mrs. Louis Fortenberry, Miss Caludia L. Conner and Mrs. Ted Padgett and one son, Raymond Conner, all of this city; four grandchildren, Linda Fortenberry, Mize and Ken Conner and Beth Padgett; one sister, Mrs. Julia C. McCoy of Jackson and one brother, Dr. J. C. Conner of this city.
