"Mark" entered the mercantile business and owned several thousand acres of farmland.

Married Willie Ann (Green) Harp on 15 Feb 1872 on the bank of the Beouf River under a huge bitter pecan tree. The reason for that selection deals with, to an extent, pioneer conditions of the country in northeast Louisiana - from TY Harp's My Kinfolk.

FOWLER - HARP
An event of unusual social interest was the wedding of Mrs. Isabelle Urquhart Fowler, widow of Edward Heatley Fowler, of Louisville, Kentucky, to Hon. D. E. Harp, prominent business man and land holder of Morehouse Parish, on Wednesday evening, at the home of the bride's son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. James E. Fowler of Louisville, Kentucky. Miss Belle #19174442 is buried in Louisville, Kentucky.

"DeMarquis Ellis Harp moved his family three miles southeast of Lind Grove (just north of the Highway 165 overpass) in 1880 on land purchased from Mr. Hersey. Lumber for their 2nd house, built in 1882, arrived at Lind Grove on a steamboat." Bartholomew's Song - page 126

Military: Harp, E.D., Pvt. Co. C 5th Louisiana Cavalry, appears on Roll of Prisoners of War. Paroled June 15, 1865. (From Shreveport Memorial Library) - father of author of "My Kinfolk" - The above soldier was the late Demarquis Ellis "Mark" Harp, father of the writer. The reversal of his initials is probably the reason his application for a pension was not honored. His (E.D. Harp) place of residence was given as Morehouse.

The only reference the writer (T.Y. Harp) ever heard the above soldier to make about his Army experience was as he called it, "Home Guard" when he and a man named Mason were sent to guard a ford on Bayou Macon. They met a squad of Yankee riders and turned to flee back to camp. He threw his Muskat in the fence corner and laid down on the mule's back and escaped, but Mason was killed. He (D.E. Harp) said as an after thought: "That mule sure could run". As a boy it struck me as being a lucky thing that Paw was riding a mule that out ran the Yankees.
