The son of Jacob & Eliza (Wortz) Hoke, in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 1" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 4 as a musician with Co. C, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg.

He married Martha Jane Epley March 29, 1870, in Illinois and fathered Lulu May (b. 05/19/71), Minnie E. (b. 09/13/73), Harlie L. (b. 07/20/75), Lorra Etta (b. 07/02/77), Roy L. (b. 01/13/81), Alice G. (b. 09/16/83), Curtis W. (b. 05/29/87), Floyd E. (b. 07/14/91), Glenn H. (b. 05/15/94), and Orville D. (b. 03/05/97). By 1867, he resided in Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois, and by 1881, in Nebraska.
