Horace Lyons
Again we are called upon to chronicle the death of one who has lived in our midst for many years. On Monday, October 11, 1891, Horace Lyons passed away, aged 60 years. The deceased had been in poor health for the past few years adn until death stepped in and relieved him he was raked with pain and suffering more than mortal will ever know. He was a descendant of William and Rhoda Lyon and was born in Ontario, Wayne Co., New York, September 15, 1831. He received his early education after the manner of most residents in rural communities at that period, working on the farm in summer and attending school in winter. He was ready and quick at learning and was considered one of the brightest scholars in school. In the year 1845, when 14 years of age, he came west with his parents and settled on a farm on the west branch of Plum River, Jo Daviess County. When he arrived at man's estate, he chose farming as his occupation, which he followed for many years. He is numbered among the old settlers and has lived in our county 40 years. He leaves to mourn his death a loving wife and nine children, also two brothers and two sisters, besides many other relatives.
