William was born in Granville or Greenville, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. He was possibly the son of John and Patiance Lyon and very probably the grandson of Caleb (1734-1832). He had seven siblings: John, Mary, Rufus, Charlotte, Betsy, Delia and Roxanna.
William left home at the age of 14, after his mother died and father remarried. He first went to Vermont, where he lived for 10 years, possibly living in Craftsbury, where his fathers cousin, Nehemiah Lyon lived. He then moved to Allegeny Co., New York in 1814. William married Rhoda Millet on March 22, 1815. They had six children: Isaac Perry, Elizabeth (Betsey), Roxanne (Roxy) Alma, Horace B., Mary and Rufus M. William died at the age of 90 years and 9 months in Morseville, Jo Daviess Co., Illinois, at the home of his son, Rufus.

Obituary
William Lyon, was born in Granville, Franklin Co., Massachusetts on July 25, 1790. He lived in his native town until he was 14 years of age, when he went to Vermont. He resided in Vermont for ten years and afterward removed to the state of New York, where he lived twenty-eight years. He was married on May 22 1815 and some time after removed with his family to the state of Illinois. He was for a greater part of his life a professing Christian and a faithful member of the M. E. Church. He was an active member of the church, being the Superintendent of the first Sabbath School started at Morseville, and a faithful attendant on the meetings of the church. William died on April 25, 1881 at the age of 90 years and 9 months at the residence of his son, Rufus Lyon, near Morseville.
