Helen Cox, 74, of Meridian, died as a result of a car accident near Kingman, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at the Meridian United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Hayes will officiate. Burial will follow in the Meridian Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Chapel of the Chimes, Meridian.
Helen was born Aug. 8, 1921, at Maiden, N.C., to Myrtle Leota Daniel and Dr. William G. Bandy. She was raised in a family of nine children. Her father was a physician and her mother was an artist. She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1941 at age 19. She taught in North Carolina schools for 4 1/2 years before coming to Idaho.
Helen married Herald Johnston Cox on July 13, 1945, at Meridian. They enjoyed a special reunion of family and friends last summer in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
In 1979, Helen was named Meridian Woman of the Year. She retired from teaching in 1980 after 34 years of service as an elementary teacher. She was honored as a distinguished teacher by the Meridian Masonic Lodge. Helen was selected for life membership in the Parent Teacher Association in 1972.
She was member of the Meridian United Methodist Church. She could often be found at the piano providing accompaniment for singing and ceremonies in a variety of organizations. For many years she was active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. She was past matron of Meridian Chapter #66, Order of Eastern Star; past president of Alpha Delta Kappa (an international honorary society); a member since 1946 of Locust Grove Grange; member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliaries; and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Boise Valley Sports Trailer Club played an important role in her life with many trailer trips and time spent at the Hi-De-Ho Park on the Payette River. Helen and Herald had been "snowbirds" for many years. They were returning from their final winter in Apache Junction, Ariz., when the accident occurred.
Survivors include her husband, Herald J. Cox of Meridian; a son and daughter-in-law, William V. Cox and Donna Johnson of Somerville, N.J.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Scott Sell of Anchorage, Alaska; three sisters, Mary Bruton, Marguerite Hefner, and Doris Caldwell, all in North Carolina; a brother, Dr. Alan Hill Bandy in North Carolina; a nephew and his wife, William and Pat Hallyburton of Eagle; and four grandchildren, Scott, Heather, and Stephanie Sell, and Christopher Johnson Cox. Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Cox Anderson.
Memorials may be sent to the Meridian United Methodist Church Family Life Center Building Fund.
