Joe Rowell came to Texas in the 1880's with his mother Elizabeth Rowell Olive and his siblings. He bought a farm outside of San Saba and grew cotton.

He married his first wife Maude Wallace about 1894 and they had four children Alvin, Jess, Ernest and Lily who died at age 2. The couple divorced shortly after her death.

His second wife Pearl Wallace moved in to take care of the household chores and the boys.

Joe and Pearl went up to Oklahoma for her first husband to sign the divorce papers. They were married in Carter County, Oklahoma on April 22, 1914.

Joe and Pearl had two children Fred Louis and Prentice. The couple were married for 13 years when Joe had died.

Per their marriage agreement Pearl inherited the house and farm.
