While in New York City where he married a nurse named Margaret Kastrup. They had two girls Dorothy and Myrtle.
Alvin developed tuberculosis and moved down to Kerrville, Texas to be near the Veterans Hospital and away from his two young girls. He was admitted into the hospital several times and died from TB in 1937.
