In the early winter of 1930, Margaret and her husband's brother, William Kraetke, and her twin daughters, Marjorie and Dorothy, took a driving vacation to California. They had a stay-over in El Paso, Texas and while there, Margaret sent a telegram to her husband. It was Valentines Day, February 14, 1930 and the telegram said:
"Thinkin a little, Wishin a little, Far off and blue. Hopin a little, Sighin a little, Lonesome for you."
At the time the telegram was sent, Ernest and Margaret had been married 27 years.
