Verna D Burnett completed her earthly journey on Dec. 12, 2009, at the age of 93. "Dee", as she was known to her friends, was born in Waco, on June 21, 1916. She was married to James T "Jim" Burnett, Jr., who preceded her in death in 2005, after 66 years of marriage. She is survived by one son, James T Burnett, III, of Athens; one daughter, Liza Ely, of Lindale; four grandchildren, Laura McClendon, of Lindale; Deanna Bearden, of Austin; Katherine Lewis, of Crestview, Fla.; and David Burnett, of Newport News, Va.; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dee was trained and worked as a medical lab and x-ray technician, but became a stay-at-home mom when her first child was born. During her adult years she lived in Waco, Houston, Richardson, and Athens. She will be remembered most of all as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. Dee and Jim moved to the Athens area in 1979, and they were members of the First Baptist Church in Athens. A memorial service to celebrat her life will be held at the church on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requeste that you make a gift to your local church or a favorite charity, or to the Bereavement Fund at First Baptist Church, 105 S. Carroll, Athens, Texas 75751, or to the Alzheimer's Alliance of Northeast Texas, 3613 S. Broadway, Ste. 401, Tyler, Texas 75701.
