Son of Benjamin Franklin Buckner and Sarah Ann Drake. He and his wife Malissia Metcalf Buckner were the parents of 11 children.

William was working on swampland he purchased in Florida when he was infected with malaria. It has been said he died in Enoree, SC on the way home AND that he made it home to Madison County, NC before he died. I have not yet found a record to verify either possible death location. I highly suspect Enoree, SC because death certificates were not used in SC at that time but they were used in NC, so in theory had he died in NC there SHOULD have been a death certificate issued. My grandfather told me in 1981 his father died in Enoree, but my dad says he died in Madison County. Oh, well !!!

His wife Malissia burned all the property deeds and ownership papers after his death so no more of her family would travel to Florida and attempt to work the land, fearing they would meet the same fate as her husband. She lived another 34 1/2 years after his death and was buried at Locust Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Another oddity I am researching is as follows: Their son Frank and his wife Lillie had a son named Marion. Marion's death record from May 12, 1978 lists his full name as William Marion Buckner AND his date of birth as December 24, 1913, the exact date of death as recorded for this William Marion Buckner, his grandfather.

The photos of the grave are from July 2011.
I had the pleasure of taking my father Max
and my aunt Janice to this cemetery on that trip, for their first visit ever to the graves of their grandfather, great-great grandparents, and various other relatives whose burials
make up the majority of this lovely cemetery.
