Katharine Lynd was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the eldest daughter of Elijah Waring and Katharine Leslie Hickman Lynd. She attended Oakhurst Collegiate School in Cincinnati and was graduated from Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, PA. She was a prolific letter writer and it is through her letters home during her years at Penn Hall in the early 1920s that we are treated to Kitty's world of house parties, boarding school adventures and misadventures, train trips between home and school, her studies and friends, and her youthful descriptions of life in general.
Katharine, known as "Kitty" in her family, moved with her widowed mother to Palm Beach, Florida in 1941 where she spent the remainder of her life. She became one of Palm Beach's outstanding musicians. She was a pianist, singer, composer, and world traveler who loved flowers, the warmth of Florida, and visiting such faraway places as India, Japan, Thailand, Iran, Egypt, the United Kingdom, France, Africa, Israel, and Russia. She collected many photographs and postcards of her travels and put them into a large album, which remains today in the care of her grand-nephew, Bruce.
One of the things quite a few of the airlines used to do was give out colorful certificates to passengers who had crossed the International Date Line or entered the air space of exotic lands. Kitty collected quite a few of these and they, too, are now framed and hang in the home of the same grand-nephew who has her photo albums. Kitty also loved animals, especially poodles. When she was not traveling, Kitty liked to spend time with the children of her only niece, Dorothy Ann Hoffmann Black in NC.
She was a member of the choir at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, the Music Study Club, the Music and Drama Club, the Shakespeare Club, and the Hibiscus Circle of the West Palm Beach Federation of Garden Clubs. In 1954, Kitty was featured in one of the West Palm Beach newspapers as a "Belle of Yesterday."

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Margaret Waring Lynd, who died in 1940, and Dorothy Ann Staughton Lynd Hoffmann, who died in 1959, and twin brothers, John Waring and Thomas Lynd, who died the same day of their birth in 1900. Katharine was survived by her niece, Mrs. Dorothy Ann Hoffmann Black of NC, grand-niece Kathleen Black, grand-nephews Gordon, Bruce, and Kenneth Black, and her cousin, Constance Brozik.
