Private funeral services will be held in the home Friday for Elijah Waring Lynd, 66, of 3410 Cornell Place, Clifton, who died Tuesday night, November 10, 1936 in Deaconness Hospital. He had been ill for over a month due to problems with his heart. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Born in Cincinnati, son of the late Elijah William and Theresa Gordon Lynd, he was educated in Cincinnati schools. Lynd's paternal grandparents were Rev. Dr. Samuel W. Lynd and Leonora Maria Staughton Lynd and his paternal great-grandparents were Rev. Dr. William Staughton and Maria Martin H.Staughton. Both grandfathers were prominent Baptist ministers, composers, authors, and educators. His maternal grandparents were Dr. John and Eliza Ann Dennis Gordon of Indiana.

On September 18, 1899 "in a pretty house wedding" in Cincinnati, E.W. Lynd married Miss Katharine Leslie Hickman, a Rookwood Pottery artisan and daughter of William and Alicia Leslie Knott Hickman. At the time of the wedding, E.W received a letter from Mr. Thomas Emery, writing from Paris, France, congratulating him on his marriage and wishing the young couple a long and happy life together.

Elijah, or Waring as he was more frequently called, was connected with Emery Industries for forty-three years, managing the Stag, Palace, Bristol, and Oxford Hotels and was the Emery Estate's General Purchasing Agent.

In May of 1915, Mrs. Mary Emery, widow of Mr. Thomas Emery, rewarded E.W. Lynd and eight other Emery employees for their outstanding service to the company by naming them as beneficiaries of a substantial number of company shares.

At the time of his death, Elijah Waring Lynd was receiver for the John H. McGowan Company, 58 Central Avenue. Other than his parents, Elijah was preceded in death by twin sons, Thomas and John Waring Lynd, born prematurely in June, 1900 and living only a few hours.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Katharine and Margaret Waring Lynd of Cincinnati, and Dorothy Ann Staughton Lynd Hoffmann and her husband John F. Hoffmann of Atlanta, GA, and his only grandchild, Dorothy Ann Hoffmann. He also leaves a sister, Eliza Leonora "Lila" Lynd Folger and her husband, Herbert Warren Folger of Dayton, Ohio, and several nieces.

The family photographs at the right show first, Elijah Waring Lynd as a young man, just starting his career with Emery Industries, and second, he is shown holding his two year old granddaughter, Dorothy Ann, who grew up to become my husband's mother.

Obituary contains some text taken from the November 11, 1936 issue of the Cincinnati-Times Star. Grave marker says birthdate is 1870, but death certificate says 1869.

Elijah Waring Lynd is my husband's maternal Great-Grandfather.
