Ottoline was 4th child out of seven of Mads Larsen Aagaard and Maren OTTOSDATTER Aagaard. Ottoline knew Niels Hansen in Denmark and agreed to follow him once he was established in United States. Niels Hansen left in 1880 and Ottoline left in 1882. Ottoline married Niels (Nels) Hansen 23 May 1882 in Hazel Dell, Iowa. Together they had nine children (seven lived past infancy).

They were: Birthe (Bertha) Mae HANSEN Ward, Otto Hansen, John Hansen, Christena Maren HANSEN Short, Laura Hansen (died in infancy), Mace Hansen, Bryan Hansen, Lydia Hansen (died in infancy), Fremont (Monty) Hansen.

Ottoline left from Krarup, Svendborg, Danmark (Denmark) about 20 April, 1882 (plus about 5 days), and arrived in Crescent, Iowa sometime before 19 May, 1882 when she and Niels applied for a marriage license. She married Niels Hansen 23 May, 1882. She was 2 years older than her husband-- Ottoline, or Lena as she was called, was the daughter of either minor Danish Royalty or a wealthy farmer. It was likely that it was Niels' share of the sale of the family farm after the death of his father and a sizable dowry from Ottoline's father which financed the building of the Pigeon Creek, IA Farm and later the farm at Loveland, IA.

Ottoline and Niels lived together until her death in 1911(the story is she "fell" against a hot stove and was burned and never recovered). Around 1921 Niels Hansen would remarry and eventually move to California.

The name Aagaärd, sometimes written as Agard, comes from the Danish which translates "farm by the stream". This name was added to Madsen to differentiate them from other Madsens. Her father was Mads Larsen (the son of Lars) and so her last name became Mad+sens. Her mother's name was Maren Ottosdatter (the daughter of Otto). Names were not conventionalized until late in the 19th century in Denmark. Some records have her last name as Madsen or Agard. By USA conventions her last name would have been Larsen or Madsen, after her father, but that isn't how they conformed it in Denmark prior to 1900.

On Danish migration page she is listed as:
Name: Aagaärd, Oline (Ottoline)
Age: 26
Last residence: Krarup, Svendborg, Danmark
Destination: Crescent, Iowa, USA
Name of Ship: Indirekte (indirect no ship name)
