Josiah was the husband of Sarah (Pitts) Smith (1826-1911). Father of thirteen children including: Elizabeth, Allison, Nancy, Mary, David, Josiah, John, George, William, Ida, Sarah, Charles and Cora.

Josiah fought in the Mexican War as a private in the 5th Tennessee Volunteer Regiment, Co. C. He was 22 at the time and had just been married for one year. On November 1, 1861, Josiah enlisted in the 5th Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate Army, under McKenzie. He was 36 when he went to fight in the Civil War and he had six children.

Josiah died of typhoid or malaria at age 55.
