Wife of Josiah Smith (1825-1880). Mother of thirteen children. Daughter of John and Sarah Pitts. Sarah married Josiah on October 15, 1846 in Blountville, Sullivan, Tennessee. She died when she was 85 yrs. old.

Death notice from the Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa, August 10, 1911, page 7:

RUSSELL – Mrs. Sarah Smith, mother of Mrs. Frank Downard and Mrs. John Hoops of this place, died Tuesday [August 8, 1911] at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Downard. Mrs. Smith had reached the age of 85 years and for some time had been quite feeble. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) conducted by Rev. Young and Rev. Tinkham, and interment made in the Salem Cemetery.
