OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. —

Ramon Alonzo Brittain, 91, died peacefully Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at his home in Oliver Springs.

Mr. Brittain was born in Casar, N.C., on April 24, 1919, the seventh of nine children of C.A. and Millie Hipps Brittain. After a career in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Brittain retired to Connelly Springs, N.C., moving to Tennessee in 2006.

Mr. Brittain prayed to live long enough to manage the care of his wife, Nellie Taylor Brittain, who was stricken with Alzheimer's. She died on March 20, 2010. They had been married 68 years.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Brittain was preceded in death by three sisters, Flora Bagwell, Blanche McNeilly, and Belle Eaker; four brothers, Hugh, Marvin, Zed, and Herbert Brittain; and his stepmother, Essie Brittain.

Survivors are his son, Rex Brittain of Tacoma, Wash.; daughter, Nena Moss (Mickey) of Oliver Springs; sister, Ruth (Roy) Bumgardner of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Marie Peters (Bill) of Shelby, N.C.; grandchildren, Reg (Karen) Brittain, Claire Brittain, Reilly Brittain, Ben Moss, Aaron (Amber) Moss; and great-grandchild, Lindsay Moss.

Mr. Brittain was known for his Christian faith, love of family, photography, handyman skills -- repairing anything from watches to bicycles; gardening and tree pruning; military service; and keen memory. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1967 and from G.E., Hickory, N.C., in 1986. He was a member of Penelope Baptist Church and a charter member of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

The family sincerely thanks Bill Morrow, of Oak Ridge, for his care and companionship during the last year of Mr. Brittain's life. We also appreciate the tender concern and treatment provided by Dr. Michael Thompson and Dr. Scott Davis.

Receiving of friends will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2010, at Penelope Baptist Church, Hickory, N.C. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Steele officiating.
