Ola was the fifth child of the 10 born to Walter Lafette Sims and Josie Virene Robertson. Her parents and maternal grandparents had relocated from Sevier County, TN, to Oklahoma, then the Indian Territory, in the early 1900s, where Ola and her siblings were born.

Two Sims sisters, Ola and her older sister Jessie, marry two Butler brothers, James Berven and Oscar Roy, the same year.

Ola Sims is 16 when she and James Berven Butler marry on 10 Mar 1924 in Seminole County, OK. The couple have two children, daughter Joyce Butler and son Arlis Butler. But by the time Arliss is born in the summer of 1928, James is already sick. The family story is that he died of organ failure after being bit by a mosquito, possibly malaria or yellow fever. He will die a few months after his son is born, at age 22, leaving Ola a young widow. Ola and her two young children are living with her parents and Ola's four younger siblings on the 1930 Wolf, Seminole County OK census.

Ola marries a second time to Velva Jewel Mayhue, 14 Nov 1933 Seminole County OK, and has one more son, Arnold D. Mayhue.

About 1946 Ola and her family move to California and settle in the Modesto area. Her parents and some of her siblings also move to California. She and her 2nd husband, as well as her parents and brothers Clyde, Vernon and O.C, are in the same Lakewood Cemetery. According to Ola's newspaper obit, she is survived by three children, 8 siblings, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
