Vernon was the next-to-youngest of the 10 children of Walter Lafette Sims and Josie Robertson, and the last of his sibling group to pass away. He lived with his parents until they passed away. No biological children but he was much loved by his stepchildren and step-grandchildren. Vernon's first wife Shirley had been married before and had one son from that marriage. His second wife Jannie was the widow of his younger brother Clyde, and had six children from her first marriage before Clyde.
