Grady was the third child and oldest son of the 10 children born to Walter F Sims and wife Josie V Robertson. Grady was severely injured in a car explosion in 1930 that took the lives of two other vehicle passengers. One of the victims was his brother-in-law Floyd Worth Davis, the first husband of Grady's sister Lois and the father of Grady's baby niece Eunice Irene. Grady is the first to pass away of his Sims siblings.
