Lena S. Mondo, 37, of Tipton was pronounced dead at the scene by Blair County Coroner Charles Burkey shortly after the accident, which occurred at 5:40 a.m., state police said.
A passenger in Mondo’s car, Chrystal D. Carlin, 17, also of Tipton, was treated for minor injuries and released from Altoona Hospital.
Mondo was traveling south when she swerved to the right to avoid hitting a deer lying across the southbound lanes, state police said.
After hitting the roadway's west berm, her car crossed the road and went into the northbound lane, where it was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by Harry Noel, 51, of Altoona. Noel was not injured.
