Born in Rineck, near Rittersbach in Elztal, Grand Duchy of Baden as " Magdalena Johanna Bauer", the daughter of Johann Bauer and Maria Agnes Hofmann. Father died in 1826, and mother remarried to Johann Beska. Had two children without benefit of marriage with Stephen Eifler, in 1848 and 1850. Rineck was "cleared" and residents forced to emigrate . Johanna, Stephen , their two children and most of Johanna's relatives (Bauer and stepfather's family Beska) arrived in Boston in summer 1850, where Johanna and Stephen married (Stephen converted to Catholicism). Resident of Roxbury and later, South Boston at 275 E. 8th St. Parishioner at Holy Trinity German National RC Church. Mother to 14 children.
