Harlow Henry Austin, 81, life long resident, graduate and community leader of South New Berlin, died June 7, 1998 in Ocala, Florida.

Following graduation in 1936, Harlow enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. During the war years, Harlow served with the rank of Sergeant with the First Division and was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Following the war, he returned to South New Berlin where for more than 25 years he was a highly regarded member of the community. Harlow actively pursued many careers in the South New Berlin area. He was a Rural Mail Carrier; bus driver, Chief of Police and led Civil Defense programs in the town. He also worked for 25 years for the Scintilla Plant in Sidney and helped operate the Texaco Station formerly located in South New Berlin.

For the last 30 years, he wintered in Dunnellon, Florida. In his later years, he was also an actively involved member in Veteran's circles; a past Commander of the Harold McIntyre Post in South New Berlin; a member and past President of the the New York State Rural Letter Carrier's Association and a life long member of the South New Berlin Fire Department and the Volunteer Fireman of New York State.

Born February 5, 1917 in New Berlin, New York, he was the son of the late Millard E. Austin and Ina (Bisbee) Austin. Harlow is survived by his wife, Mary Johnson Austin of Dunnellon, Florida; his daughter, Joyce-Avonne Fox and her husband, Herb of Wilmington, NC; his grandchildren: Lisa (Lewis) Gates and her husband Brian of Marcellus, NY and Martin Farrell also of Marcellus; two sisters, Helen Austin of South New Berlin and Mildred Silliman of Sidney, NY. Mr. Austin was predeceased by his first wife, Neva Matterson; his second wife, Olga "Becky" Sebeck and by his sister, Esther Brooks.

Funeral services will be held June 14, 1998 at 2 P.M. at the South New Berlin Baptist Church with a Fireman's and full Military Rites following at the Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin. Arrangements made by the Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich, N.Y.
