Mrs. Esther Brooks, 77, prominent area youth leader and retired teacher, died Jan. 4, 1991 in the Sidney Hospital.
Mrs. Brooks had been a life long resident of South New Berlin and a graduate of the South New Berlin High School. Following graduation, she attended Morrisville College; Oneonta Normal School and Oneonta State where she received her Master's degree in Education.
She had taught for over 50 years, most of which was spent teaching in South New Berlin. Her initial teaching experience at the age of 17 was in a one room country school.
She dedicated her life to the students serving on many youth committees during her years at South New Berlin, including serving as an advisor to the band majorettes and 4-H clubs. Mrs. Brooks retired from teaching in 1978.
She was a long time member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
Born Jan. 7, 1913 in South New Berlin, she was the daughter of Millard and Cora Ina (Bisbee) Austin. On May 28, 1938, in South New Berlin, she married Alfred Ray Brooks who died January 7, 1950.
She is survived by a daughter, Cathy B. French of Windsor; a grandson, Kerry James French of Windsor; two sisters, Helen J. Austin of South New Berlin and Mildred Stiles Silliman of Sidney; one brother, Harlow H. Austin of South New Berlin. She is also survived by brothers-in-law, Clifford Brooks of Scotia and Donald Brooks of Earlville as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and devoted former students.
Funeral services for Mrs. Brooks will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 1991 at 1:30 P.M. from the Fahy Funeral Home in Norwich. The Rev. Charles Taylor, pastor of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of South New Berlin will officiate.
Burial will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the South New Berlin Central School. Friends may call at the Fahy Funeral Home Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service.
