Alma Lorraine Aschbrenner, age 98, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at the Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls.
Alma was born on October 27, 1912 in West Union, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Lida (Northrup) Hills. She attended country school near her home in West Union through the 8th Grade. She then helped her parents on the farm and with raising her younger brothers and sisters. Alma was married in 1933 in Galena, Illinois to Ernie Aschbrenner. The couple made their home in Waverly until 1937, when they moved to Irwin, Iowa, where Ernie had been Transferred from the Great Western Railroad. In 1950 they moved to Harlan, Iowa, and in 1954, returned to Waverly. In 1961, the couple was divorced. Alma spent her time as a housewife, providing day care for several area families, and working at the Maxfield Café in Waverly. In November of 1997 she moved to Janesville.
Alma enjoyed crocheting, reading, listening to music, dancing, and most of all spending time with and taking care of her grandchildren. She was also a member of the Kazoozie Susie's band which performed at area nursing homes.
Alma's memory is honored by two children, Harold (Shirley) Aschbrenner of New Hampton and Joyce (Jim) Williamson of Cedar Falls, eighteen grandchildren, numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, a brother, Jack Hills of Des Plaines, Illinois, two sisters, Helen (Glen) Wittenburg of Readlyn, Bonnie (Verle) Buck of Elk Run Heights. Preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Lorraine Aschbrenner in infancy, three sons, Melvin, Ray, and George Aschbrenner, a granddaughter and great grandchildren, six brothers, Russell, Bill, Robert, Archie, John and Jim Hills, and three sisters, Marian Spaight and Nancy Potter, Betsy Steiber.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 11, in Waverly with Pastor Matthew Versemann officiating. Burial will follow at the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 10, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Alma's family
