John Carl Latimer (known as Carl by family and friends) was the son of James Guy and Elva Mae (Armstrong) Latimer. He grew up on the family farm and attended the Canute schools. He was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Thrower on Sep. 17, 1946 at Elk City, OK. To this union four children were born: James, John Carl, Jr, Rita and Joann. They made their first home in Norman, OK, where he worked for a dairy farm.

Later, Carl went to work in the oilfield and the family moved often. In 1961 they moved to Woodward, and he retired as a Tool Pusher from Unit Drilling Company after over 30 years in the oilfield. His wife, Jean, passed away in 1988.

On October 19, 1995, he was united in marriage to June McMurphy in Woodward and they have made their home there since that time.


Carl enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He was a member of the Elm Street Baptist Church. Funeral services were officiated by the Rev. Mark Kurzel at the Billings Funeral Home of Woodward.

He was survived by his wife, June, of the home; two sons, James of Edmond, OK; John Carl, Jr. and his wife Tammy of Moore, OK; two daughters, Rita Shirlene Beckman of Woodward; JoAnn Baxter and husband Bill of Pryor, OK; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Charity Meiser of Minnesota, two step-grandchildren; sister-in-law Wanda Latimer of Stafford, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
