My great-grandfather Willis Kagey was born 1860 in Fairfield County, Ohio, son of Stephen Kagey (1833-1921) and Mary Warner Kagey (1835-1901), daughter of Samuel W. Warner and Elizabeth Hite. The Warners and Hites were among the early pioneer families of Fairfield County. In 1887 Willis married Lydia Caroline Kumler (1860-1922). She was the daughter of Henry Kumler, Jr. (1807-1884) and Anna Marie Haley (1825-1893). Children of Willis and Caroline were Harry Leon, Mabel, and Edgar. When Wills died in 1892 of Typhoid at age 32 they were living in Columbus where Willis worked as a bookkeeper. Widow Caroline then brought their children back home to her parents' farm near Baltimore in Fairfield County. This untimely death apparently caused a rupture in the intergenerational transmission of Kagey lore which later generations would need to rediscover.
