Harry Leon Kagay (1887 - 1950), my grandfather, was born in Fairfield Co. OH, the son of Willis Kagey (1860 - 1892) and Lydia Caroline Kumler (1860 - 1922). His father, a bookkeeper in Columbus, died of Typhoid when Harry Leon was about five years old. He became a Latin teacher, high school principal, and superintendent of schools (1917 - 1942) in Perry Co. OH, particularly at Thornville. In 1910 he married Truphenia Blanche Weist (1888 - 1955) of Fairfield Co., daughter of Oliver Jacob Weist (1852 - 1934) and Laura Bright (1857 - 1939). Harry Leon and Blanche had two children, Harry Ralph Kagay (1911 - 1995), my father, and Sue Margaret Kagay (1910 - 1977). After retirement in 1942 Harry and Blanche moved to Columbus near Ohio State University where he had studied many summers during his career in education. The family was originally from Switzerland, where the name was spelled Kagi with an unlaut over the "a" but was variously anglicized in America as Kagy, Kaegy, Kagey, and Kagay. In that spirit as a young man Harry Leon changed his family's spelling from Kagey to Kagay, as did his sister, Mabel (1890 - 1968). Earlier generations of the family had lived in Lancaster Co. PA and the Shenandoah Valley of VA before coming to Central Ohio in 1833. All branches of the family are recorded in Franklin Keagy, "A History of the Kagy Relationship in America, 1715 - 1900" (1899).
