GEORGE WALLACE CARAWAN was born in Lowland, N.C., and died in Norfolk County (now Chesapeake), Va. His father was Marcus Carawan, son of Benjamin and Delilah White Carawan, and his mother was Marietta Alcock, daughter of Frederick and Harriett Spence Alcock.
He was married to Mary Arabelle Spain and the following were their children:

Wallace Carawan was a farmer who suffered from poor health a great part of his life. He sold his farm in Lowland, N.C., and purchased a farm near Northwest, Va., however the land company offering these properties for sale went defunct and the family returned to Lowland. Thereafter he purchased a farm on Mt. Pleasant Road, Norfolk County, Va., and lived there for the remainder of his life.
Life adjusted to progress - driving an automobile was a bit of a hazard for him - when sighted coming down the road in his car, children hurried to open the gate because at times if it was closed he just crashed through it. "Miss Arabelle" thoroughly enjoyed listening to the radio, especially "The Lone Ranger" in the evening; one evening (after Miss Arabelle had listened to her program and retired) he inquired of his son if he too enjoyed "The Lone Ranger" and when his son replied that he didn't care much for it Wallace said: "Neither do I, I say damn the Lone Ranger - but if your Mother enjoys it that's fine with me."
He dearly loved to attend an auction and as a result some of the items Miss Arabelle accumulated were not ordinarily found in a country farmhouse.
During his latter years he spent a great deal of time under the "Big Oak" which remains standing today and his young grandson, Jimmy, was pleased to have him as a companion.
