A native of Lowland, N.C., he had lived in this area 40 years. His late parents were George M. and Mrs. Maratta Alcock Carawan. He was a retired carpenter.
Besides his wife, surviving are three daughters, Mrs. N.W. Newsom of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Felix Rothchild of Beverly Hills, Calif.; and Miss Frances V. Carawan of Great Bridge; two sons, Rex L. Carawan of South Norfolk and Harry B. Carawan of Great Bridge; two sisters, Mrs. Julius Winn of Goldsboro and Mrs. Effie Guynn of South Norfolk; one brother, Ira Carawan of Hobucken, N.C., 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The body was taken to Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park.
