Probably born in Philadelphia like all his relatives, George was the ninth of eleven children. He like his four brothers who survived to adulthood, was a butcher by trade. He most likely also served in the Union Army during the Civil War but unable to determine which of three George Lawrences from Penna. was him. George married Josephine Etley, younger sister of his sister-in-law Mary Ann Etley Lawrence (wife of Edward)on July 25, 1863, at Protestant Episcopal Church of the Redemption, 400 N 22d St., Philadelphia. They had four children: Katherine, George W., Ellen and Albert Lafayette Lawrence. They lived in Philadelphia until about 1898 when they moved to Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County, Pa.
