Hiram was the tenth of eleven children of Michael & Catharine (Sweitzer) Lawrence (Lorentz) He was the second child with that name, born three and a half years after the death of the earlier Hiram and two days after his birthday in 1829. As a child he had smallpox as witness his facial scarring mentioned in his military records. He was, like his father and brothers before him, a lifetime butcher. Hiram was a "Landsman" in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, enlisting on April 22, 1861 in Philadelphia for a term of 3 years. He served on the ships Brooklyn and Richmond. On April 10, 1865 he joined the Union Army as a Private for one year Company E 11th Penna Cavalry Regiment. In 1867 & 1868 he lived at the home of his sister Mary Jane (Thomas) Evans at 939 Nectarine Street, Phila. He enlisted a second time in the Navy on August 1, 1870 for another 3 years. On Feb. 19, 1874 he married Esther Jane Lake in Philadelphia. Known in the Lawrence family as "Hyde". In his later years he participated in veterans' parades in Philadelphia. He was a member of the G.A.R. Post #400, and several other organizations. His grandnephew, Archie Lawrence (1908-1992) used to say that when he was a small boy "Hyde" would pull his hair, so Archie would kick him in the shins.
