HERBERT GRASS, 90, VIOLIN MAKER, DIES
DEFERIET-Herbert L. Grass, 90, of 19 Wilna Ave., a retired St. Regis Paper Co. employee and a well-known violin-maker, died this morning in Carthage Area Hospital after a long illness.
A committal service will be a 2 p.m. Monday at Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion.
There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, Carthage.
Contributions may be made in his name to the Carthage Area Rescue Squad.
He is survived by a son, Herbert, Syracuse, and a daughter, Mrs. Louise VanAuken, Deferiet.
Born at Black River, Feb. 12, 1893, son of Lewis and Louise Grass, he attended Black River schools and married Anna Leon Aug. 25, 1917. The couple moved to Deferiet in 1918.
Mrs. Grass, who worked in the Seferiet store from 1928 to 1946, died in June 1964.
Mr. Grass joined the St. Regis Paper Co. at the age of 19 and worked there 46 years, retiring in 1958 as a stationary engineer.
In his early 20s he purchased a Henri Farney violin and later, using the Farney as a model, began to build violins. His woodworking hobby also included construction of tables, cabinets, picture frames and other items. In a 1980 article in The Watertown Daily Times featuring his violin-making craft. Mr. Grass estimated he had made about 40 custom-made stringed instruments.
