Death of Stephen Whisenand
Stephen Whisenand, who had been a resident of Buchanan County for more than half a century, died Jan 29 at his home near the New Bridge, northeast of Walker. Funeral services were held at Troy Mills at 11 AM, Saturday, being conducted by Rev C I Fisher. Interment was made in the Troy Mills cemetery. Stephen Holman Whisenand was born in Monroe Co, IN, June 17, 1878, where he lived with his parents until 1851, when they moved to Buchanan Co, IA, where he continued to live till the time of his death, Jan 29, 1907, being 68 years, 7 months and 12 days of age. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Bailey, Jun 2, 1859. To this union 5 children were born, 2 of whom reside in this community and one at Stanley, IA. An infant son and daughter, together with father, mother, 9 brothers and sisters, preceded him to the better land. Two sisters, of Oklahoma, are left with the wife and daughters to mourn the loss of a kind brother, husband and father. He felt that he was prepared to go, expressing a desire to cross over the river. He united with the Christian Church in 1860. He was a veteran on the Civil War, being a member of Company F, Fifth Iowa Infantry.
