There is some confusion whether her first name should be spelled "Catherine" or "Katherine." She is shown as "Catherine" in the 1900 census and the 1910 Dallas City Directory (prior to her marriage). She is shown as "Katherine" in the 1910 and 1940 census, her 1918 Marriage License, the 1925 Dallas City Directory, the Texas Death Index and the Social Security Death Index, and on her tombstone ("my mistake" according to her daughter Emily Hereford Surles). She is shown as "Katie" in the 1920 census and "Kate" in the 1930 census. Her daughter says she was named for her grandmother Catherine McLean Hooe. The only signed item we have seen is a letter signed "Aunt Kate." When she applied for Social Security, one of her sisters had to attest as to her date and place of birth. We decided to use "Catherine" for our family tree, primarily to distinguish her from Mr. Hereford's first wife Katherine Howell.
