Balser was a veteran of the Union Army - Civil War. He enlisted on November 14, 1864 and served until the end of the war. He was a private in Co. F, 42nd Indiana Infantry.
Obituary from the Bremen Enquirer, Bremen, Indiana, September 15, 1927:
"Balsar Manges, well known in Bremen where he was a resident for many years, died at the Soldiers Home in Lafayette Saturday. He was born in Ohio on June 8, 1845 and came to Indiana when he was a boy. In 1876, he was united in marriage with Lydia A. Heminger who died in 1918. Mr. Manges was a veteran of the Civil War having enlisted November 14, 1864 and serving until the end of the war. In 1912 he went from Bremen to the State Soldiers Home. On May 7, 1919, he was united in marriage with Rose Ann Marquand who survives. Other surviving relatives are one daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Beehler of Bremen and five grandchildren. They are Mrs. Loneta Aldrich of Teegarden, Indiana and Harold, Richard, Mildred and Beatrice Whitsel of Bremen. One daughter, Mrs. Dora Whitsel, preceded her father in death. Funeral services were held Monday at the Soldiers Home. Burial was in the cemetery at that place."
Please note: Balser is not listed on the 1850 census with his father, however, it is possible that since he was the youngest child, he may have been sent to live with other relatives to help raise him after the death of his mother (who died between 1845 and 1850). He is definitely the son of Balthaser "Balser" Manges, Sr. He is listed as the brother of Mathias Manges in Mathias' obituary.
