Fred was the son of Balthaser Manges and Catherine (Gulosen/Gulcher) Manges. He came to the United States with his family when he was six months old. The family arrived in New York on July 22, 1840 and moved to St. Joseph County, Indiana. Frederick joined Co. K, 29th Indiana Infantry on October 17, 1861 at Camp Nevin, Kentucky. He died of enteritis on August 29, 1862 at the age of 22.
(One record states that he died on August 26, 1863, but another states it was August 28, 1862, and another record states he died on August 29, 1862.).
