He helped his father on their Kansas farm. In his youth he spent many days alone with a flock of sheep. In his late teens, his father sent him to Wyoming to find a suitable place for sheep ranching. He arranged for the purchase of a small ranch near the mouth of Shell Creek. This 1899 purchase became the first of many parcels along Shell Creek and in the uplands of the Big Horns to become part of the Linn Ranch. John held an interest in the ranch until it was sold in the mid-1930's. After they sold the ranch, he owned a filling station in Greybull. They lived in town at that time.
