Allison Byrd, 23 years old, a Markleysburg resident, remained in a critical condition today, the victim of a self-inflicted bullet wound. The bullet from a savage rifle ripped through the youth's abdomen while he was sitting on the running board of his car at Markleysburg after an argument with his 16 year old girl friend, Margaret Nicola of Markleysburg. The couple had come to Uniontown on Sunday to visit Mr. and Mrs. Robert Collins of rear 84 Highland Ave. It was reported that they had a quarrel and that she refused to return home with him. She made the return trip to Markleysburg with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Collins, while Byrd followed in his own machine. When they reached Markleysburg, Byrd took the rifle from his car and was sitting on the running board a few yards from the other three when the gun discharged. He was rushed to the Uniontown Hospital where an emergency operation was performed. The bullet entered the abdomen and emerged at the hip. Questioned by State Motor Police, Byrd reportedly stated that he was attempting to remove the bullet from the gun when it exploded. Uniontown Herald, December 11, 1939
