Gladys Ann Ross was born May 7, 1923, in Hays, KS, to Mary B. Miller and George F. Ross, Sr. She died on December 7, 2006, in Colorado Springs, CO. Gladys married Alex L. Staab November 1, 1942, in Hays, KS. Alex died in 1979, after 36 years together. She was married to Robert A. Smith, March 13, 1982, in Glen Vista, CO. Bob died in 1994. Gladys is survived by four daughters: Carolyn (Max) Carpenter, Colorado Springs; Janice (Michael) Mullin, Watertown, SD; Miriam (James) McKinney, Albuquerque, NM; Paula (Jerry and Jason) DeSalvo, Fountain, CO; eleven grandkids, thirteen great-grandkids, and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her siblings: Vincent A. Ross, Lillian Hartzel, Dorothy Biondich, Elma Stepp, and George F. Ross, Jr. Gladys cherished music, singing and dancing. Her passions included flowers and birds. Sharing memories of ancestors, contemporaries and descendants was very important to her. She read voraciously, and laughingly said she'd wait to die because she still had so many books to read. Active in mind, she worked crossword puzzles daily and was great at math and accounting. Gladys felt deeply for the Indian missions and their children. She never gave up on her faith, although she was disheartened by the hierarchical church and the politics of our country. A memorial mass is planned at a later date. For information: [email protected] or 509 N Maple, Watertown, SD 57201-2447. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to: Security Public Library (Colorado Springs), St. Francis Mission (St. Francis, SD), Saint Stephen's Indian Mission Foundation (St. Stephens, WY), or Pikes Peak Hospice (Colorado Springs).
