Philip was born 22 Jan 1844, the son of William Henry Glider and Sarah Schears, near Buffalo in Erie Co., New York. He was the 5th of nine children, his siblings: Henry W, Sarah, Dorothy, George G, Jacob, Christian, Charles and Peter. In 1855 the family was living in Tonawanda township, Erie County. By 1860, Philip’s father had moved the family to Seventy-Six township, Washington County, Iowa.

Philip married Mary Birky, daughter of Andrew Birky and Anna Kempf on 16 Mar 1868 in Washington County*. They farmed first in Iowa County, then in Washington County where they lived most of their lives. Mary reports in the 1900 census that she had twelve children, and 6 were living at that time. Ten children could be identified for this biography: Henry, Sarah Ann, Charles, Joseph, Caroline L, Emma J, Nelson, Lewis Walter, Bertha E, and Arthur Raymond. Henry, Charles, Joseph and Bertha all died young.

In the 1870 census, Philip and Mary are living in Greene township, Iowa County with four-month-old Henry; in 1880, they have moved to Lime Creek township in Washington County with daughters Sarah and Caroline; in 1885, still in Lime Creek township with Sarah, Carrie [Caroline] and Emma in the household; in 1895: they are still in Lime Creek, now with Sarah, Carrie, Emma, Nelson, Lewis and Arthur; in 1910, still in Lime Creek and sons Nelson and Lewis are living with them; in 1920, the last Federal census before his death, Philip and Mary are living in Lime Creek and son Nelson is living with them.

An 1894 land ownership map shows that Philip owned 40 acres in Washington County, and a later land ownership map shows Philip owning those same 40 acres in 1906 which were located east and slightly south of Wellman.

*The record states that Philip Glider married "Mary Beckey”.

Note: Philip's parents are also buried at Wassonville.
