Bertha Bartels was born on March 18, 1904 at Wagner, South Dakota the daughter of Carl and Marie (Dunkhas) Bartels. She married Adolph Kriege on July 31, 1922 at Wagner, South Dakota. They had four children. They made their home northwest of Winner, South Dakota until his (Adolph) untimely death in 1927, Bertha and her children lived in Tripp County until she move to Kimball, South Dakota in 1965. On January 12, 1995 she entered the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home at White Lake, South Dakota and resided there until the time of her death.
After her husband's death she raised her four children and helped raise several nieces and nephews, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed children very much. She also enjoyed making and quilting quilts, and giving them as gifts.
She is survived by two sons: Lawrence and Robert, both of Kimball, SD: one daughter, Dorothy (Wesley) Ernst of Winner, SD: one sister, Alice Hibbs of Winner, SD: 14 grandchildren: 27 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband: one daughter, Fern (Ellis (Lou) Raymond: 4 grandchildren: one great-grandchild: seven brothers, Herman, Adolph, William, Paul, George, Louis and John.
