We believe we have found a christening/baptism record for this James Hacking in the parish register of Saint Mary's at Lancaster, Lancashire, England "18 [January 1756] James Hackin, son of James Hackin of Skerton."

Note that this date is not a case of double dating, i.e. January 1756/7, since the image of the parish register lists baptisms from October 1755 through December 1755 on the page on the left and follows with January 1756, etc., on the page on the right.

Up until 6 March 2015, the earliest know Hacking ancestor, James Hacking was born about 1757 according to his marriage record. On 21 July 1799 at Burton-in-Kendal, he married a much younger women, Ann Pearson, born about 1780. They had three sons: James (1800-1800), William (1801-abt 1848), and James (1802-1839). They had 15 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren, William had 9 children and James had 6 before he died. The widow of James, Jane Pearson, married again and had 4 more children.

Previously, we had no record of James before he married Ann Pearson in 1799. He is listed as a Twine spinner on the birth records of his sons, but his will describes significant ownership of properties, for which he receive rental payment. Some have claimed he was an English Earl, but we do not have proof of that or what happened to his wife after he died (see her Find A Grave memorial for her newly discovered burial information). Since many of the baptisms, marriages, and burials took place at Burton-in-Kendall, it was assumed that he is buried there. However, a new record has been found giving his burial date as 5 December 1836 in the Saint Luke Cemetery in Skerton, Lancashire, England. Since his will states he was of Skerton, it makes sense that he would be buried there in a cemetery founded in 1828.

Two earlier wives and some children (trying to confirm which children are his in the records we have found so far).
He was first married to Jane and they had two daughters, Ellen and Jane or Jenney. All three females died in 1780.

Recent discovery of 3 more generations of fathers named James Hacking would make this James Hacking IV.
