Henry Getz was a shoemaker, by trade, like many of the Getz family.

He was mustered in on 12 Aug 1862 as a member of Co. F, 131st Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. in the 2nd Bde, 3rd Div, V Corps, Army of the Potomac.

At the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, the V Corps was commanded by BG Daniel Butterfield, the 3rd Division by BG Andrew A. Humphreys and the 2nd Brigade by Col. Peter H. Allabach.

The V Corps, 3rd Division (Humphreys) assaulted Marye's Heights in mid-afternoon. The apex of the assault reached within 50 yards of the stone wall before being cut down.

As part of the V Corps, the 131st Pennsylvania also participated in the infamous "Mud March" and in the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA.
