Oldest Resident of Toulon, 91, Is Stricken
Stark County's oldest resident who was born in the county was summoned by death shortly before noon Saturday when Mrs. Margaret Fell, 91 years old, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elmer H. Buffum, in Toulon. She was one of a small group of Civil War veterans' widows of this community.
Funeral rites were conducted at 2:30 Monday afternoon in Toulon Congregational church of which she had been a member for nearly three-quarters of a century. Rev. E. Frazer Bell, pastor of the church, officiated at the services, being assisted by Rev. Robert Taylor, pastor of Toulon Baptist church, a neighbor of the decedent.
Song service was given by Miss Lucille McKee, with Miss Irene Nowlan accompanying at the organ. Selections were "Lead Kindly Light" and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought."
Body-bearers were A. F. Williamson, Ray Nicholson, Fred Nicholson, S. D. Fell, George Fell and A. G. Fell.
Interment was in Toulon cemetery.
Among those from out of town attending the services were Mrs. Will Collinson and Mrs. and Mrs. Howard Collinson, of Altona; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Davis, of East Peoria; Mr. and Mrs. Al Lynn, of Maywood; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wolfe, of Bradford.
Life-Long County Resident.
Margaret Fell, second daughter of David and Jane (Johnson) Nicholson, was born on a farm one mile north of Toulon February 17, 1846. For the past 17 years her home was with her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Buffum, where her cheerfulness radiated to her large circle of friends and where her long, eventful and useful life came to a close at the noon hour on May 1, 1937, at the age of 91 years, two months and 14 days.
In her early childhood, her parents returned to their former home in Sangamon County, returning to Toulon in 1856, where they continued to reside until their life's close. It is especially worthy of note that the family circle of 10 children was not broken by death for 68 years. Nine brothers and sisters have answered the call in the past 15 years, Mrs. Fell being the last to receive the summons.
She became the bride of Robert Fell, of Toulon, a Civil War veteran, April 6, 1870, and this companionship covered a period of 45 years, Mr. Fell being called February 13, 1915.
Six daughters and one son were born to this union, five of whom reside in this section. The eldest daughter, Mrs. Mabel E. Davis, passed away June 21, 1910, at her home near Marcus, Iowa. The others are Mrs. Violet Grimm, of Wyoming; Mrs. Daisy Wolfe, of Inglewood, California; Mrs. Mary Janes, of LaFayette; Mrs. Barbara Buffum, John D. Fell and Mrs. Agnes McClellan, all of this city.
Church Member 71 Years.
Mrs. Fell was a faithful member of Toulon Congregational church for more than 71 years. She was a charter member of the Woman's Relief Corps and a life member of Toulon Chapter No. 10, Order of Eastern Star.
