In 1900 he and his parents, five of his siblings (all except Melvin), and a cousin, 18-year-old Viola Phillips (his mother's sister Amanda's daughter), lived on a farm they owned, mortgage free, in Pike Township, Coshocton County, OH.

In 1910 he and his parents and brothers Burl and Ernest lived there.

In 1920 he and his wife and their daughter lived in a place they were renting on East Main Street (adjacent to Newark) in Madison Township, Licking County, OH. He worked as a car repairer in a railroad shop.

In 1930 he and Nellie and their six children lived on a farm they owned in Fallsbury Township in the same county. They did not have a radio.

In 1940 he and his wife and their eight children lived there. Their home was valued at $500. Thelma worked as a house servant, with an income in 1939 of $200 for 52 weeks of work.
